The morning after Diwali this year, we were all greeted by a cleaner sky. Yes, it could have been better. But had we all not resolved to stay away from crackers, it could have just as easily been worse too.

We can all take credit for finding a solution that lies in our hands. Something that we can do without expecting authorities to solve it for us.

So why stop now?

There is at least one more solution that is completely within our reach.

Sharing rides.

Every time one of us leaves his or her car or bike at home and finds someone going their way at their time, there is one less vehicle on the road. And the air gets free from the exhaust of one vehicle.

Every time one of of us offers to take someone else in their cars, or their bikes, the same happens.

We have the power in our hands to take off many more cars from the road. And the exhaust of many more cars from the air.

Hard to believe they were strangers once.

But when was the last time that happened?

We are still surrounded by all these strangers, each on her or his way, brushing past us in their rush. Don’t you wonder if you somehow found a reason to talk to any one of them, and found a common love, where would it all end?

When was the last time you actually talked to a stranger, and turned the person into a friend?

You can do it now.

Find a stranger going your way. At the time you are.

And offer them a ride in your car. Or ask to go in theirs.

Maybe you will bond over the music you love listening to.

Or over your career choices. Or your early retirement plans.

Maybe you will discover that your kids go to the same school. Or that you did.

You could exchange books over the ride, or gossip, or business cards.

Whatever you do over the drive, you would have made a friend.

Or met a stranger.

Two things that we are doing less and less of.

And together, you would have taken one car off the road.

That’s a feeling worth sharing.

Should one burst crackers in the name of tradition?

Or not burst crackers for the sake of the air we breathe?

You could take sides in this debate.

You could argue that a day’s festivities does little harm compared to what we let loose in the atmosphere the year round. Or you could argue that a day’s festivities in a packed city does more damage than we can imagine.

But one thing everybody agrees on – the air we breathe is polluted. Not just on Diwali and the days following it, but on every day of the year.

And among many things that can help bring that down, carpooling is among the top.

Because to do that, you need little more than your own willingness.

You need no law, no push, no directive from the government.

All you need to do is pick someone who has chosen to leave their car at home.

Or leave yours and travel with someone who chose to drive instead.

It is something you can do throughout the year.

But especially now, when the city is gearing up for Diwali.

Whichever side of the debate around crackers you may be on.

You know many reasons why you should carpool.

Here’s one why you shouldn’t.

There is nothing you can say against carpooling.

It is good for the environment, good on the pocket, easy on infrastructure, a great way to connect, and a lot more.

But here’s one thing you shouldn’t use it for.

Making money.

If you are looking to make money by offering rides in your car, then carpooling is not the right thing to do.

One, it goes against the terms of private car ownership, that states that you can’t profit from using a personal vehicle for commercial use.

Another, when carpooling is used to generate profits for the car owner, the focus shifts from finding people with common routes and time to finding people who are willing to pay for a journey. Which makes the connections fraught with risks for both the parties. The transport systems that are set up to fill this need come with guard rails, filters and checks that prevent this. A carpooling ecosystem works on connections that share not just the route and time, but also the ride cost.

Car owner or Driver (or Pooler) – included.

At ePoolers, we have built a Dynamic Pricing Algorithm that takes into account the vehicle type, its make, model, year, fuel type, city of origin, number of riders, and then automatically calculate the ride cost, and distribute it among everyone in a ride. With the Car owner / Pooler counted among them.

This is done to ensure that no cash transactions take place, nor is there any room for any dispute. And because the Pooler/ Car owner pays her or his own share, those offering rides have no incentive to do it other than to split the commute costs, without getting inconvenienced.

Or, quite simply, there is no reason for people on the ePoolers platform to go out of their way to find riders. Literally. Because it won’t make them money. But it will do what carpooling is meant to do – make the roads more open, less congested, and bring down the cost of daily commute for everyone.
